The Republic of Ireland saw their 2026 FIFA World Cup dreams evaporate in agonizing fashion on Thursday night, falling 4-3 on penalties to the Czech Republic after a 2-2 draw at the Eden Arena.
Despite a commanding two-goal lead early on, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side couldn’t hold off a late Czech surge, extending Ireland’s World Cup absence to 24 years.
Match Highlights: A Tale of Two Halves
Ireland started the European Qualifying Play-off semi-final with clinical intensity. Within the first 25 minutes, the “Boys in Green” appeared to be cruising toward the final:
- 19’: Troy Parrott converted a penalty following a VAR review, marking his sixth goal in three matches.
- 23’: Ireland doubled their lead when a Dara O’Shea header deflected off Czech keeper Matej Kovar for an own goal.
However, the momentum shifted just before halftime. A foul by Ryan Manning allowed Patrik Schick to pull one back from the penalty spot. Ireland defended resolutely for much of the second half, even hitting the woodwork through Jayson Molumby, but disaster struck in the 86th minute when Ladislav Krejci headed home an equalizer to force extra time.
The Penalty Lottery
In the shootout, Ireland gained an early advantage when Caoimhin Kelleher saved from Mojmír Chytil. However, misses from Finn Azaz and Alan Browne proved costly. Jan Kliment stepped up to strike the winning penalty, sending the Czech Republic through to face Denmark in the play-off final.
Hallgrimsson: “I feel pride and pain”
Despite the exit, manager Heimir Hallgrimsson remained optimistic about the team’s trajectory.
“One word is pain. But I feel pride for the performance. We showed we can punch above our weight against teams higher in the rankings. There is growth in this squad.”
With Ireland, Wales, and Northern Ireland now out, England and Scotland remain the only representatives from the British Isles heading to the World Cup this summer.
