Former Manchester City icon Edin Dzeko is on the verge of entering football’s history books. The veteran striker has been named in Bosnia-Herzegovina’s official squad for the upcoming summer tournament, positioning him to become one of the very few players to compete in a World Cup at age 40 or older.
The Exclusive 40+ World Cup Club
Playing on football’s biggest stage at 40 is a rare feat, especially for outfield players. In fact, Cameroon legend Roger Milla remains the only outfield player to achieve this, famously scoring at the 1994 World Cup.
The remaining members of this legendary age group are all goalkeepers:
- Essam el Hadary (Egypt) – The oldest ever at 45 (2018)
- Faryd Mondragon (Colombia)
- Pat Jennings (Northern Ireland)
- Peter Shilton (England)
- Dino Zoff (Italy)
- Ali Boumnijel (Tunisia)
Dzeko won’t be alone in defying Father Time this summer. He is expected to be joined by fellow icons Cristiano Ronaldo (41, Portugal) and Luka Modric (40, Croatia).
Dzeko’s Vital Role in Bosnia’s Journey
Currently playing his club football for Schalke in Germany’s second tier, Dzeko remains the heartbeat of his national team. With 148 caps to his name, the forward featured in seven of Bosnia’s eight Group H qualifiers, as well as their high-stakes play-off semi-final and final. He netted his 73rd international goal during the crucial semi-final victory over Wales.
Bosnia-Herzegovina is the very first nation to officially announce its 26-man roster for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Marking only their second-ever World Cup appearance, Bosnia will compete in Group B alongside Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland.
