Few sights in modern football are as electrifying as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia receiving the ball wide, dropping a shoulder, and driving at a retreating defence. The 25-year-old Georgian international has been doing exactly that throughout this season’s Champions League campaign, and Paris Saint-Germain are counting on him to deliver once more when they host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their semi-final showdown.

Since completing his January 2024 move from Napoli to the Parc des Princes, Kvaratskhelia has settled into life at PSG at a remarkable pace. This campaign has been his most prolific to date: his combined tally of 15 goals across Ligue 1 and the Champions League surpasses even the 14 he managed during Napoli’s iconic Serie A title triumph in 2023.
Eight of those strikes have arrived in Europe alone — a run that began with a stunning long-range effort against Atalanta in September and continued with decisive goals in knockout victories over Chelsea and Liverpool. That combination of creativity, clinical finishing, and relentless defensive work has earned him the nickname “Kvaradona” among Napoli supporters, a nod to the Diego Maradona comparisons that follow him wherever he plays.

Defending European champions with a point to prove

Last season, Kvaratskhelia played a central role as Luis Enrique’s side made their first-ever Champions League final, capping that run with a historic 5–0 demolition of Inter Milan that brought the club its first continental title. Back-to-back Champions League triumphs would place PSG among an elite tier of clubs in the competition’s history.
With the Ligue 1 title effectively within reach PSG lead second-placed Lens by six points with four games remaining the Champions League represents the primary target between now and the end of the season. Kvaratskhelia was rested for PSG’s recent routine league win at Angers, a deliberate move by Luis Enrique to keep the winger fresh for the biggest games.
World Cup absence adds extra motivation
Despite his extraordinary individual quality, Kvaratskhelia faces the bittersweet reality that he will not be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Even with the expanded 48-team format, Georgia failed to qualify — meaning the Champions League represents the grandest stage available to him this year. That reality only sharpens his focus.
Luis Enrique has played down any suggestion that World Cup qualification concerns are distracting his squad, pointing instead to the unique motivational pull of European football’s premier club competition.
