The “Azzurri” nightmare continues. In a night of pure sporting drama, Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their third consecutive absence from football’s greatest stage. While Italy falls, Bosnia & Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Sweden are celebrating historic qualifications after a series of nail-biting playoff finals.
The Tragedy in Zenica: Italy Falls to Bosnia
Italy’s path to the USA, Mexico, and Canada ended in heartbreak in Zenica. Despite an early lead through Moise Kean (15′), the match turned when Bastoni received a straight red card in the 41st minute.
A resilient Bosnia capitalized on the man advantage, equalizing through Tabakovic in the 79th minute. After a scoreless extra time, the match went to the “lottery” of penalties. Bosnia remained perfect, winning 4-1 as Esposito and Cristante missed for the Italians. For the second time in their history, Bosnia & Herzegovina are headed to the World Cup, where they will join Group 2 with Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland.
Penalty Drama in Prague: Czechia Edges Denmark
A parallel thriller unfolded in Prague. The Czech Republic took the lead twice via Schulz (3′) and Krejčí (100′), but Denmark refused to go away, responding with goals from Andersen (72′) and Høegh (111′).
In the shootout, the Danes crumbled. Højlund, Dreyer, and Jensen all failed to convert, handing the Czechs a 3-1 victory on penalties. The Czech Republic now enters Group 1 alongside Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea.
The Return of the “Crescent-Stars”
After a 24-year hiatus, Turkey is back! Following their legendary third-place finish in 2002, the Turkish national team finally secured their return to the big stage. A 53rd-minute strike by Kerem Aktürkoğlu was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Kosovo in Pristina. Vincenzo Montella’s side will now compete in Group 4 with the USA, Australia, and Paraguay.
Gyökeres Strikes Late for Sweden
In Stockholm, Viktor Gyökeres proved why he is one of the world’s most feared strikers. In a high-octane clash against Poland, Sweden led twice only to be pegged back by a Zalewski strike and a goal from Panathinaikos forward Karol Świderski.
With the game heading for extra time, the Arsenal forward found the net in the 88th minute to secure a 3-2 victory. Sweden moves into Group 6, where they will face the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.
